Chickpea Sundal / Channa Sundal



Dussera Navaratri are from 13th - 21st October this year. During these days South Indians mostly make Sundals and other desserts as offerings to Lord Durga in 9 avatars for 9 days. 


Channa Sundal is a stir fried dish made with white Chickpeas / Kabuli Channa / Senagalu and tempered along with coconut. Use fresh grated coconut for nice aroma. This sundal is easy and quick to prepare and is healthy snack. We can also have it as a side dish with rice.


1 cup Chickpeas
2 teaspoons Oil
1/2 teaspoon Channa Dal
1/2 teaspoon Urad Dal
1/4 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
1/4 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
3 Red chillies
1 Sprig Curry Leaves
3 tablespoon Grated Coconut
Salt to taste
  1. Soak chickpeas overnight. Pressure cook them for 5-6 whistles. Discard water and keep it aside. In a pan, heat oil add channa dal, urad dal. Saute till they turn brown add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chillies and curry leaves. Saute for a minute and then add boiled chickpeas.
  2. Mix it and saute for 2 - 3 minutes. Now add grated coconut and salt. Saute and mix for a minute and the sundal is done.
  3. You can have this with rice or as it as a snack.
